  • Reflections on Mom's visit - 1

I thought I'd keep an up-to-date blog about my Mom's visit last year, but it ended up being too life-altering to share online. I'm glad she came to visit although I'm still recovering from it. I realized, while she was here, how this country has become my home, even though I hold no legal rights to call it thus and I've only lived here for 9yrs. I can only imagine what those white farmers who were kicked out of Zimbabwe felt. Their families having lived in the country for generations then being told they didn't belong...! Tsk.

As difficult as it is for me to accept now, I know I don't "belong" here. The government of this country reserves the right to kick me out of their country at any time. I respect that and will leave peaceably when that time comes! But, in a strange way, I'm not sure I "belong" in Zimbabwe either. I'm not sure. I think a trip back home is in overdue. It'll help me figure that out.

Regardless, it was helpful to see my own flesh and blood living in my new context. It made my life here more real. It made the separation from my family more real and yet more bearable.

  • Momma's here!

So, my mother is here in the States, visiting with me. Here's evidence:

Mom's and my shoes by the door...

Her clothes in my closet happy

    And her winter coats!

She arrived on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The first night, we pretty much slept...But the next few nights after that, we talked all night. It was very good for catching up (we're still catching up!) but very bad for my work week the next week. If only I could have taken the whole of December off.

Anyhow, we celebrated Mom's 60th birthday on the next Monday. I can't believe my Mom is 60! Of course we had to dine at Seva - free entrée for the birthday girl laughing

So I was hoping it wouldn't snow before she arrived so she could see the transformation from the end of autumn to the beginning of winter. And...It didn't snow until after her birthday - thanks to God.

We woke up one morning, to some really wet snow that didn't really stick. But here she is, experiencing her first ever snowfall:

Now, at some point, I'll rotate those pictures and make this a more pleasant viewing experience for all. But just wanted to update my Xanga, so I can keep my word to Judy. And, so I can direct the fam to this blog for a more personal online update on Mom's visit to the States. More to come!

  • Veldt Fire

When your passion becomes your life work,
One of two things can happen.
You could become just a flickering flame in the vast expanse of endless possibilities,
Or you could become a veldt fire, setting ablaze everything you touch.
I want to be a veldt fire!

  • Outbid

During the past ten days, we have been praying for a particular facility near the University of Michigan that will provide much needed accommodation and classroom facilities for our CAMPUS missionaries, and also be used for training and ministry-related activities. CAMPUS was one of nine other groups competing for a 32-room, 3-story building that was being offered at slightly below $1m (the listed price being $2.5m).

Two days ago we were notified that our offer did NOT go through. (Evidently, others outbid us). In spite of the apparent disappointment caused by losing this facility, we believe God has answered our prayers:

"Our Heavenly Father has a thousand ways to provide for us of which we know nothing. Those who accept the one principle of making the service of God supreme, will find perplexities vanish and a plain path before their feet." (Ellen G. White, Ministry of Healing, p. 481)

This means we must continue to pray for the Lord (1) to lead us to another facility of His choice and once it is found (2) to provide ALL the resources we need to procure that facility. Meanwhile, as we pray for God's leading, we are considering all options – including purchasing a plot of land and to build a facility customized to meet our specific needs.

To date, we have received commitments and pledges of up to about $300,000 towards the CAMPUS House. With God's help and your efforts, we believe we can raise at least $1m within 30 days towards the much-needed facilities.

Send your tax-deductible contribution in two ways:

  • $1m in 1month

CAMPUS (Center for Adventist Ministry to Public University Students) has been in need of a house for years now. A property has recently opened up at the University of Michigan for a steal of a price - less than $1million. With less than a month to raise $1million your contribution of $20, $200 or $500 will make a dent!
